What is Invite Your Neighbour?

by Solel Announcements, January 31, 2019

On Friday, February 22nd at 8pm Solel will be hosting our annual “Invite Your Neighbour” service. Our friends and neighbours from the interfaith community are invited to attend, along with any of your friends and neighbours whom you invite. This service is always well attended and we enjoy coffee and refreshments and great conversation after the service, getting to know one another and answering questions about our congregation.

Why do we do this? As a small Jewish community, this is one way that we can build bridges of understanding and collaboration. In an increasingly diverse world, we want to build relationships and friendships with our neighbours, our co-workers, and friends. While we might work together or go to school together and chat in the neighbourhood, all too often we don’t really know that much about each other’s faiths, customs, and cultures. Our guests find this service to be very moving and often remark on the similarities between faith traditions. In a time when the world seems to be becoming more polarized and divided, it is essential that we look more at our commonalities rather than our differences in order to build a vibrant future for our society. We are more similar than we are different. The service is very participatory, and we include explanations about what the prayers mean, why we do what we do, and what we believe. Soleniks might learn something too!

We look forward to welcoming our neighbours on February 22nd. Come and bring your friends and neighbours too!
