The Smiling Face That Greets You

by Joel Brown, August 21, 2016

Whether you’re a stranger, visiting a new place for the first time or whether you’re coming back to the comfort of your own home, isn’t it wonderful to be greeted by a friendly smile?

At Solel, our shared Jewish home, that friendly smile often comes from one of our many wonderful volunteer ushers. Our ushers are here to welcome newcomers, to make sure they are comfortable, can find a place to sit and know which book we’re using for the service.

It doesn’t seem like such a big thing. Certainly it’s not a hard job, but it makes a huge difference to how our visitors and guests feel about their experience coming to services at Solel. What’s more, as a volunteer, it gives you a great opportunity to connect with your fellow Solelniks as you greet them when they enter our sanctuary.

They say first impressions are lasting ones. Making a great first impression on our guests and visitors is vital to helping them feel at home and to showing them what we already know, that Solel is a friendly, comfortable place for us to come together as a community.

If you’re looking for something that you can do to help Solel remain strong and to grow, then please consider joining the friendly group of people who serve as ushers. Many of our ushering team have been doing this important mitzvah for many years. The next time you come to Solel, be sure to thank our usher for the service they’re doing for our community. Better yet, talk to them about what motivates them to help Solel in this way. Maybe you’ll be inspired to join their ranks.

If you think you might be interested in helping Solel through the ushering team, and in particular, if you would like to help us coordinate the ushering schedule, please speak with me any time.
