Coming Together

by Joel Brown, February 1, 2017

There are many ways in which we can come together to celebrate the richness of our Jewish heritage, our closeness as a community, and also our place within the broader community in which we live.

I’d like to highlight just a few of these opportunities which are coming up in the next little while and encourage you to join in these great events.

Invite Your Neighbour
On Friday, February 24, 2017 Solel will once again perform the collective mitzvah of sharing our spiritual heritage with our friends and neighbours. This evening marks our annual, special “Invite Your Neighbour” service.

While we’re always delighted to welcome guests and visitors to Solel, this special Friday night Shabbat service gives us a unique opportunity to welcome people who are not accustomed to attending Jewish worship services. As a synagogue, we’ve reached out to our interfaith and community partners to extend an invitation to join us. Our service that night will have all of the usual prayers and songs that make up a Friday evening service, but we’ll be making a special effort to explain what we’re doing, and also, importantly, why we do it. At the conclusion of the service, we’re planning a wonderful oneg to be able to share fellowship with our guests and each other over refreshments.

Solel’s Invite Your Neighbour service is one of the important ways in which we reach out to the very diverse community in which we live, to share our traditions and our faith, and to help our neighbours better understand who we are as Jews and how much we share with their own faith traditions.
I hope you’ll join us for this special Erev Shabbat Service, Friday, February 24 at 8:00pm. Please bring your friends, neighbours or colleagues who haven’t been to a Jewish service before.

Also, if you like to bake, please consider contributing to the extra special oneg that will follow the service. Contact the Solel office to let them know what you’d like to bring. Items ready to serve on disposable plates are most appreciated!

O Solel’o Mio
On Saturday, March 4, 2017, Solel’s Membership Committee is once again coming together to bring us a night of fun, food and fellowship. We invite you to join us for an Italian adventure featuring a four course Italian mean, with entertainment, games, raffles, beverage tastings, a live DJ, dancing and of course a late night sweets table.

This evening promises to be fun for all, and proceeds will benefit Solel and our many projects and programs. Tickets are only $50 per person – but you must get your tickets by February 12, 2017. Don’t delay, contact the Solel office today and join us for this great evening.
And much more…

But that’s not all! It’s almost Adar, which means that Purim is just around the corner. We love to celebrate this happiest of Jewish holidays. Our annual Purim service, play and party is coming Saturday, March 11. And since at this time of year we like to look forward to spring, don’t forget that Solel’s annual Community Second Passover Seder is coming Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Save these dates and stay tuned for more details!
