Friday Nights are Special

by Joel Brown, April 2, 2017

I look forward to Friday evenings at Solel each week. There is something about our Erev Shabbat services that I find to be really special. It’s a chance to put the cares of the week behind me and to welcome Shabbat with my family and friends in my extended Jewish home.

While Friday evenings are special at Solel, this month we have something extra special each and every Friday evening. I want to bring these extra special Fridays to you attention.

On Friday, April 7, Solel’s Sisterhood will be participating in our Erev Shabbat service and sponsoring a delightful oneg for after the service. Come and celebrate the arrival of Shabbat with Sisterhood, reconnect with old friends, and maybe make some new ones!

On Friday, April 14, our service will feature a special guest speaker, Solel’s own Professor Leonard Rosmarin, who will be giving a talk entitled: “Moving Beyond the Holocaust: Elie Wiesel’s Spiritual Journey from Night to A Beggar in Jerusalem”. This promises to be a fascinating talk by one of Solel’s great teachers.

On Friday, April 21, starting at 6:15pm we’ll be holding a community Shabbat dinner which will be followed by a special service commemorating Yom Hashoah at 8:00pm. This will include a special presentation by Rabbi Benjie Gruber. This year, Solel’s observance of Yom Hashoah will include remembrance of those family and friends of Solelniks who were lost during the Holocaust. If you would like to include any of your relatives in this remembrance, please provide names and their relationship to you by email to Cheryl Shine through the Solel office. During our Yom Hashoah service the names will be displayed in our Sanctuary. I hope you’ll join us for the community dinner starting at 6:15pm. Please let the office know that you’re planning to attend no later than April 18.

On Friday, April 28, we’re looking forward to welcoming representative from Pathway Community Developments to give us an update on what’s new with one of Solel’s favourite Tikkun Olam projects. Pathway is a major provider of affordable housing in Peel Region and Solel members have been and continue to be key to Pathway’s success, since its inception. Come and find out how you can help support Pathway’s ongoing efforts.

I hope you’ll join us Friday evenings throughout April. We have some terrific opportunities to fill ourselves with good food as well as filling our minds, our hearts and our souls.
