Dear Solelniks,
We know that many families find themselves strapped for
cash this year, and one result is that our religious organizations
face financial challenges as well. We hope that careful
budgeting, along with our love for Solel, will help us to
weather the storm.
However, our twin congregation in Ramat Hasharon, Israel,
faces quite a different dilemma, as you will read in the
letter below. To answer the call, the Executive and Board
of Solel have decided to send 100% of our Yom Kippur Solel
Appeal this year to Congregation Darchei No'am.
When we make the appeal over Yom Kippur, I hope that you
can lend your support to keep our twin congregation alive
and strong. Please note that a donation of $180 will earn
you an overseas membership - what a lovely opportunity to
belong to an Israeli congregation! - and for this amount
Solel will submit your name to Darchei No'am.
You can make your donation by writing a cheque to Solel
Congregation, earmarked for "Solel Israel Appeal."
This can also be done by credit card over the telephone.
Alternatively, you can sign your pledge card on Erev Kol
Nidre. All these means will entitle you to a tax receipt.
Whichever way you decide to make your contribution, it will
enable our twin congregation to meet this challenge and
to prevail.
Let's work together over the coming year to affirm the
principles and communities of Reform Judaism, both at home
and in Israel. Thank you in advance for your support.
L'Shana Tova,
Rabbi Lawrence Englander
A Special S'lichot Experience
High Holidays can be a very busy time.
We make plans to get together with family and friends, and
the sanctuary is full when we come to Solel. It's a perfect
time to catch up with everyone - but around this time of
year, we also crave some quiet time to look inward, to take
stock of our own life.

Dechert Condemns Attacks on Lahore Ahmadiya Community
Mississauga, Ontario - Bob Dechert, Parliamentary Secretary
to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for
Mississauga-Erindale joins PM Harper in condemning the attacks
on two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore, Pakistan, that have killed
and injured at least 80 people.
"I strongly condemn the attacks on the Ahmadiya community
in Lahore. I offer my condolences to the families and friends
of the victims of these attacks.
To attack worshipers in a prayer hall is a cowardly and
reprehensible act and I hope the perpetrators are brought
to justice. Mississauga is home to thousands of Canadians
of Pakistani Heritage and the Ahmadiyyan Muslim Faith. It
is important to know that the Government of Canada continues
to engage with the Government of Pakistan to promote freedom,
democracy, the rule of law, freedom of religion and human
rights."

Disaster Relief
Earthquake in Chile
On February 28, 2010 one of the largest earthquakes in
recorded history of 8.8 magnitude struck Chile, killing
hundreds, displacing hundreds of thousands and causing widespread
destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, offices and infrastructure.
Two million people are impacted by the disaster.
Donations can be made to either the United
Jewish Appeal Chile Disaster Relief Fund (416-631-5705)
or to Veahavta

IsraAID: The Israeli-based Forum for International Humanitarian
Aid, which will be deploying a team of specialists who will
provide medical treatment, conduct search and rescue operations
and distribute food and clothing. Donations to Veahavta
will be distributed through the Jewish Coalition for Disaster
Relief to partner agencies that are providing crisis relief
in Chile. A Canadian Tax Receipt will be issued from either

Jewish community of Canada mobilizes Haiti earthquake
relief effort
TORONTO --- In response to the devastating
earthquake in Haiti, Canadian Jewish Congress's National
President Mark J. Freiman and CEO Bernie M. Farber
communicated the following message in a letter to
the Haitian chargé d'affaires in Ottawa:
"On behalf of the Jewish community of Canada,
we express our deep sorrow on the tremendous loss
of life and damage from the earthquake in Haiti. We
grieve with you and our fellow Canadians of Haitian
origin at this sad time and we extend our condolences
to the families of the victims. We pray for a complete
recovery of those hurt or ill as a result of this
terrible natural disaster and for the expeditious
rebuilding of the devastated lands.
You will be interested to know that in response to
the crisis, United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Greater
Toronto and Combined Jewish Appeal of Montreal have
established funds for humanitarian relief aid to the
afflicted areas. This is in keeping with the traditional
Jewish concept of "tikkun olam" which translates
as "repair of the world". It is usually
meant in a metaphorical sense but in this instance
it will be literal as Haiti works to recover from
this devastating earthquake.
We sincerely hope that this will assist in relieving
the human suffering experienced in Haiti."
To contribute to the relief funds in Toronto, go to
the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto site at https://www.ujadonations.com/login.asp?destinationsite=donations&destinationid=33
or call 416-635-2883.
To contribute to the fund in Montreal, go to the Federation
